Siddhartha means “He Who Achieves His Goal” in Sanskrit. He then became Buddha, “The Awakened One,” and his image has been represented by Buddha sculptures for millennia. Buddha sculptures are more than just physical representations of Buddha; each one has its own meaning. Buddha’s life is marked by each position, posture, expression, and hand gesture.
Padmasana, or Lotus Position, is an ancient Indian cross-legged seated meditation pose in which each foot is placed on the opposing thigh. It is a pre-hatha yoga yoga asana that is commonly utilized for meditation in Hindu, Tantra, Jain, and Buddhist traditions.
There are two interpretations for this statue of a seated Buddha with his right hand uplifted and pointing outwards. The first is that of the Protection Buddha, whose uplifted right hand signifies a shield symbolically. Overcoming Fear is the second meaning, which is closely tied to the first (since one who is receiving protection would be less fearful).
Apart from the raised right hand, the essential aspects of this stance are : The Buddha can be shown seated or standing, and the left hand can be extended outward or palm up in the lap.
